A daemon is a program that runs in the background and performs special operations at defined times or responsively to an event. The word daemon originated from the UNIX environment, but programs running in the background are common of most server Operating Systems. Windows NT refers to background processes as services.

Apache is a daemon, as well as sendmail. These are what make your Internet experience what it is.
