FTP FAQ

Q. What is FTP?
A. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.  FTP programs are used to transfer files from one computer to another.  This differs from "downloading" files via a web browser because FTP can also "upload" files to a remote computer.

Q. What can I use FTP for?
A. Well, you can use FTP to download files from an FTP server instead of via the Web.  Many times, FTP sites offer a more complete selection of files over their Web counter parts.  Another great use for FTP is uploading your personal homepage to EZ-Net's server!!!  Please see our FAQ on how to upload your homepage for more information.  Anytime that files need to be moved from one computer to another, FTP is it!

Q. Where do I get an FTP program and which ones are good?
A. You can find one to download at many of the sites listed on our software links page.  As far as which one, it's your choice, but we like cuteFTP a lot... give that one a try first!

Q. Do I need any special information to use an FTP program?
A. Most FTP programs come with many "default" sites that are set up already.  If you are going to set up a "new" site, here is the information you will need:

Q. How do I transfer files once I am connected?
A. If you are using cuteFTP, your computer is on the left part of the screen, and the remote computer is on the right.  To download a file from the remote computer, drag and drop the desired file into from the right window to the left window (your computer).  To upload a file, just drag and drop from the left window to the right window.  Note:  if you are connected to a public FTP site, you will probably not be able to upload to the remote computer - you will not have authorization to do so!

That gets you started!
